Lancaster Police Launch Homicide Investigation After Fatal Shooting on South Hughes Street

LANCASTER, S.C. — The Lancaster Police Department has initiated a homicide investigation following a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Thursday night.

According to police officials, officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of South Hughes Street at approximately 8:24 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026, after receiving reports of a person being shot.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male lying in the front yard of the home, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities are currently withholding the victim’s identity pending notification of his next of kin.

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said Lancaster Police Chief Don Roper. “Our investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this case, and we are asking anyone with information to come forward.”

The investigation is being led by the Lancaster Police Department, with forensic assistance provided by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit.
