Finding Forever: Meet the Dapper Tuxedo and Pint-Sized Mix Waiting for Homes in Fort Mill

FORT MILL, SC — As the calendar turns into 2026, the Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is already hitting the ground running. With 36 successful adoptions already recorded this year—9 dogs and 27 cats—the rescue is working overtime to match their “fur tenants” with the perfect families.

This week, two specific residents are capturing hearts: a resilient tuxedo cat named Malcolm and a “munchkin” dog named Fauna.

Malcolm: The Dapper Survivor

Malcolm is a strikingly handsome tuxedo cat, roughly 1.5 years old, who arrived at the HSYC as a stray. Having spent time fending for himself in the elements, Malcolm is now looking for a life of indoor luxury.

  • The Vibe: Currently a favorite in the cat room, Malcolm is known for his playful energy, especially when he gets time in the play kennel.

  • The Transition: Potential adopters should keep in mind that Malcolm may need a little “warm-up” time. Rescue staff emphasize that his initial shyness is simply a byproduct of his time on the streets; with a little patience, his sweet personality shines through.

  • Ready to Go: Malcolm is already neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Fauna: The “Cutie Patootie” in Foster

For those looking for a smaller canine companion, Fauna is a standout candidate. A Carolina Dog mix estimated to be about 3 years old, Fauna was pulled from Animal Control to find a softer landing at the HSYC.

  • Life in Foster: Because the shelter environment can be overwhelming, Fauna is currently staying with a foster family. Her foster reports that she is a “munchkin” who truly enjoys the company of other dogs.

  • The Ideal Match: Fauna is looking for a patient owner willing to help her with house training and the adjustment to a new home. In return, she offers “faces of pure joy” and a lifetime of loyalty.

  • Health: She is fully spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

A Community Call to Action

While the success stories are piling up, the HSYC is facing a challenging start to the year. Dog intake numbers are currently at critical levels, mirroring a trend seen in municipal shelters across the region.

To help alleviate the pressure, the HSYC is leaning on the York County community in several ways:

  • Digital Advocacy: Supporters are encouraged to share pet profiles on social media to increase visibility for long-term residents.

  • Retail Therapy: The organization operates a high-end thrift shop, PAWSibilities, and an active eBay store, where 100% of the proceeds go toward animal care.

  • Business Partnerships: Local businesses looking for a “win-win” promotional relationship are encouraged to reach out to the rescue to support their “FURmission.”
