The Atrium Health board gave unanimous approval on Wednesday to fund a new acute-care hospital in rapidly growing York County, South Carolina as reported by Queen City News.
The vote greenlights a substantial $450 million capital investment to bring a major medical facility south of Charlotte, where the population is projected to grow by approximately 18%—adding more than 56,000 residents—over the next five years.
The new campus will feature a 200,000-square-foot facility designed to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services in the area. Key components of the planned acute-care hospital include:
-
A four-story tower with 60 bed spaces.
-
Four state-of-the-art operating/procedure rooms.
-
15 emergency bays.
-
A 73,000-square-foot medical office building.
Atrium Health intends to build the facility on property it already owns in the Fort Mill area. While a specific location has yet to be determined, the hospital is expected to be operational and providing services by 2029.
Atrium Health officials noted that their existing Pineville hospital frequently serves patients who reside in York County. The provider already maintains a presence in the county through various urgent care facilities and smaller clinics.
The only existing full-service hospitals currently operating in York County are managed by Piedmont Medical Center. The new Atrium facility will increase competition in the area, particularly as Novant Health is also planning a hospital just across the county line in Indian Land.
