Monday, December 1, marks World HIV/AIDS Day, a global observance dedicated to uniting the fight against the illness, supporting those living with HIV, and honoring the lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses.
In South Carolina, the Department of Public Health (DPH) and the University of South Carolina are collaborating to host a commemorative event to recognize the day.

As of December 2023, the DPH reported that an estimated 20,000 South Carolinians were living with a diagnosed HIV infection. World HIV/AIDS Day serves as an annual call to action and awareness for the ongoing public health challenge.

The program will begin at the Russell House with a preparedness rally, followed by a solidarity walk to the South Carolina State House grounds for a special candle lighting ceremony.
Free Testing Available
To further support the initiative, DPH county health departments across the state will offer free testing events for HIV, STDs, and Hepatitis on Tuesday, December 2. Residents are encouraged to contact their local health department for specific testing times and locations.
