The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) and the York County Sheriff’s Office have launched a joint operation to combat a recent increase in traffic fatalities in the county. The initiative will focus on key roadways and target dangerous driving behaviors.
According to a representative from the SCHP, while statewide traffic fatalities have seen a decrease compared to last year, York County has experienced an increase of seven fatalities during the same period. Law enforcement officials say they are not satisfied with this trend and are taking action to reverse it.
As part of the operation, deputies and troopers will increase patrols on several roads that have been identified as high-risk areas. These roads include Highway 21, Highway 72, Highway 274, Highway 557, Highway 55, Highway 49, and Highway 161.
The combined effort will focus on three key violations that contribute to fatal crashes: speeding, driving under the influence, and seatbelt violations.
The York County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the responsibility for traffic safety belongs to everyone, and they feel it is their duty to partner with the Highway Patrol to make the roads safer.
By pulling resources from across the state and focusing on these specific areas, officials hope to reduce collisions and save lives in York County.
