BAYADA Home Health Care, a prominent independent, nonprofit home health care provider, has awarded York Technical College $600,000 to bolster efforts against South Carolina’s escalating nursing shortage. The state is projected to face the fourth-largest deficit of registered nurses in the U.S., with over 19% of positions expected to be unfilled by 2037, according to data from the Health Resources and Services Administration.
In a collaborative effort, BAYADA and York Tech have launched a new apprenticeship program designed to educate and train aspiring nurses and nurse assistants. Students participating in this program who work part-time at BAYADA may be eligible to receive up to $23,000 in scholarship funds. These funds are intended to support their pursuit of various nursing credentials, including Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Nurse Assistant ECG Technician, Patient Care Technician (PCT), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
The program offers students paid, hands-on home care experience across diverse areas. This includes Pediatric Nursing, providing family-centered care for children from birth to 18 in home and school settings. Students can also gain experience in Adult Private Duty Nursing, which involves managing complex medical needs for young adults to seniors, including intensive care unit-level diagnoses. Additionally, opportunities are available in Personal Care, offering household support and companionship to seniors and adults needing assistance to maintain independent living.
York Tech’s healthcare programs are recognized among the best in South Carolina, with its nursing program ranking second out of 31 nursing schools. These programs are designed to provide aspiring healthcare professionals with a robust foundation in sciences, essential industry knowledge, and critical social skills in caring, communication, and critical thinking, preparing graduates for licensing exams and professional careers.
Prospective students can apply for the scholarship program at any time. Eligible applicants will begin their York Tech enrollment and paid on-the-job training with BAYADA in the semester following their application approval.
