SCDA Offers Pesticide Disposal Events Across South Carolina This Month

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is providing South Carolina residents and agricultural professionals with opportunities throughout May to safely dispose of outdated, unusable, or unwanted pesticides.

The pesticide and chemical disposal program is open to all private, commercial, and non-commercial pesticide applicators in the state, as well as homeowners. SCDA staff will be present at each collection site to oversee the pesticide collection and disposal process and will have the final say on which products are accepted.

Participants can dispose of up to 2500 pounds of solid pesticides and 300 gallons of liquid pesticides free of charge. Individuals planning to dispose of more than 30 gallons of liquid or 250 pounds of solid pesticides are asked to notify John Stokes at 803-737-9696 or [email protected] in advance.

The program will accept a variety of pesticide products, including herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, fungicides, and similar products used in agricultural production or around the home. However, rinsate will not be accepted. Fertilizer will only be accepted if it is combined or co-packaged with a pesticide, such as weed and feed products. Compressed gas cylinders (metal cylinders with a valve) and empty pesticide containers will not be collected.

The SCDA advises that collection events may be subject to cancellation due to severe weather conditions. Any cancellations will be posted on the SCDA’s official website, agriculture.sc.gov, and information regarding potential makeup dates will be announced at a later time.
