Tri-Union Seafoods has initiated a voluntary recall of specific canned tuna products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names. This action follows a notification from the company’s supplier regarding a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull-tab can lids. The defect may compromise the integrity of the product seal, potentially leading to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
In South Carolina, the recalled Genova 5 oz. canned tuna products were distributed to Harris Teeter and Publix stores. Consumers in the Fort Mill area who have purchased canned tuna from these retailers should check their products against the recall information and follow the guidance provided above.
