South Carolina state officials announced nearly $167.3 million in grant awards earlier this week aimed at transforming and strengthening health care access across the state’s rural communities.
The investment distributes 228 one-time grants to bolster primary care, maternal and infant health, pediatrics, and behavioral health services. The funding is specifically designed to dismantle long-standing barriers to care while establishing long-term capacity through facility upgrades, advanced technology, and targeted workforce development.
Administered by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS), the grants are part of the state’s Rural Health Transformation Program. The program generated widespread interest across South Carolina, with SCDHHS receiving 712 applications prior to the June 1 deadline. Final awards were selected through a rigorous, multilevel merit review process aligned with federal requirements.
The grants address a wide variety of local operational and clinical needs. Funded initiatives include:

Expanded mobile crisis-response partnerships pairing local law enforcement with behavioral health agencies.

Cybersecurity infrastructure enhancements to protect systems at a rural independent hospital.

Specialized obstetrical surgical equipment, including a surgical robot designed to assist with complicated deliveries.

Additional funding across these categories supports investments in health information technology, remote patient monitoring systems, facility physical upgrades, and healthcare workforce training programs.
