A 39-year-old man was shot and killed early Thursday morning in Rock Hill after confronting a person who was allegedly breaking into his vehicle and pursuing the suspect as they fled, according to police and as reported by WCNC.
The incident occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Amelia Avenue. Investigators with the Rock Hill Police Department said the victim observed someone inside his vehicle and went outside his residence to investigate.
When confronted, the suspect ran from the area. Police said the victim chased after the individual before gunshots were fired.
Responding officers located the victim in a yard on Amelia Avenue suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending further investigation and notification of family members.
Following the shooting, officers from the Rock Hill Police Department and the York County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search of the surrounding area in an effort to locate the suspect. As of Thursday, no arrests had been announced, and the suspect remained at large.
The Rock Hill Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the investigation. Officials have not released a description of the suspect or additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
