Attorney General Urges Hearing Health Awareness for National Observance

In observance of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month this May, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson is calling on law enforcement officers, military members, and the general public to prioritize their auditory health. With nearly 50 million Americans—including approximately 15% of South Carolinians—experiencing some degree of hearing loss, Wilson emphasized the importance of regular screenings and the dangers of fraudulent products.

As a Colonel in the National Guard, Wilson highlighted the specific risks faced by those in high-noise environments, such as soldiers and police officers. He noted that proactive protection and 30-minute hearing tests are essential for maintaining the readiness and well-being of those who serve. He also pointed toward senior citizens as a particularly vulnerable group that should remain vigilant regarding their hearing health.

The Attorney General issued a stern warning regarding the rise of misleading sales tactics in the hearing aid market. State officials have noted an increase in companies selling devices that lack FDA approval or use deceptive registration claims. To protect consumers from financial loss and ineffective treatment, the Attorney General’s office released several key guidelines:

  • Avoid Subpar Products: Over-the-counter and direct-to-consumer devices often lack the quality necessary to effectively treat significant hearing loss.

  • Investigate Sellers: Consumers should verify companies through the Better Business Bureau and maintain skepticism regarding online endorsements.

  • Verify Return Policies: It is critical to understand specific cancellation and refund timeframes before completing a purchase.

  • Seek Professional Consults: A screening by a qualified professional is the only way to determine which specific device meets an individual’s medical needs.

  • Evaluate Pricing: Officials warn that deals appearing too good to be true are likely deceptive.

By following these precautions, South Carolinians can navigate the complexities of the hearing aid market while ensuring their long-term auditory health remains a priority.
