York, SC – The York School District One (YSD1) Board of Trustees voted on the identity for the new middle school scheduled to open in 2027.
The new middle school will be known as White Hill Middle School. The selection of this name reflects the historical location of the school. The 1936 J.H. Young map of the United States and the 1910 Jones and Walker map of York County show that the site for the school is near the historic White Hill Church. Black churches typically operated schools for African – American children after emancipation. The Young map shows that White Hill Church operated a school like this near the future site of the middle school. It was called White Hill School.
The recommendation of the school name, mascot, and colors was made by a committee of district employees, students, parents, alumni, community, civic and faith-based members.
“There were a lot of people on the committee and I think that the diversity, the various backgrounds, really shows how strong our district is in communicating with each other and coming to a consensus. I think that says a lot for the entire committee,” said Scott Childers, YSD1 Board Chair.
White Hill Middle School’s mascot will be the Wolves and their colors will be red, black, white and silver.
