It was a historic night for York County athletics as both Fort Mill and Clover High Schools secured state wrestling championships on Wednesday. While Fort Mill continued its long-standing dynasty in Class 5A Division II, the Clover Blue Eagles soared to the top of Class 5A Division I, marking a dual-victory for the region at White Knoll High School.
The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets secured their fourth consecutive state championship. Delivering a commanding 52-11 performance against Lugoff-Elgin, the Yellow Jackets finished their season with a perfect 31-0 record.
The victory marks the second straight undefeated season for Fort Mill, a team that has lost only three dual matches over the past four years. The dual began at 132 pounds, and after an initial Lugoff-Elgin win, Fort Mill took total control. A string of victories by Cooper Van Beynum, Jayden Nguyen, Keenan Coston, Lincoln Greene, and Broden Mitcheson pushed the lead to 22-3. Senior Lincoln Greene contributed a 16-0 technical fall, ending his high school career with four championship rings.
Joining their neighbors in the winner’s circle, the Clover Blue Eagles captured the Class 5A Division I state title for the first time in school history. The Blue Eagles defeated James Island 34-31.
With both schools bringing home trophies, York County has effectively established itself as a powerhouse of high school wrestling in South Carolina.
While the team titles are now decided, both programs will shift their focus to individual state tournaments.
