Winthrop Women’s Basketball Player Suspended 8 Games Following Altercation with High Point

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Big South Commissioner Sherika A. Montgomery announced today that a Winthrop University women’s basketball player has been reprimanded and suspended for eight games following an physical altercation during the Eagles’ February 4 contest against High Point University.

The suspension, which accounts for 25% of the team’s scheduled games, comes after a conference review determined the student-athlete repeatedly struck an opponent near the conclusion of the game. This disciplinary action is in addition to any penalties mandated by NCAA playing rules.

A Focus on Ethical Conduct

The conference cited its Bylaws on Ethical Conduct, which demand that all student-athletes, coaches, and staff uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship. In an official press release, the league emphasized its role in fostering a safe and respectful environment for collegiate competition.

Commissioner Montgomery underscored that the league views these moments as vital lessons in accountability.

“I want to reiterate the Big South Conference’s unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of our competitions and ensuring accountability when our standards are not met,” Montgomery stated. “College athletics serve as a laboratory not only for academic and athletic development, but most importantly for personal growth. We remain dedicated to creating student-athlete experiences rooted in development, advancement, and excellence—personally, academically, and athletically.”

The conference’s swift and firm response serves as a clear reminder of its dedication to safety and fair play within the league.
