Rock Hill Murder Suspect Arrested After 8 Years in Cold Case Breakthrough

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A breakthrough in a nearly decade-old cold case has led to an arrest in Rock Hill. According to reporting by Queen City News, the Rock Hill Police Department has charged 51-year-old Paul Ray Craig Jr. with the 2016 murder of Walter Faile.

The investigation began on July 7, 2016, when Faile was discovered dead in his home on Hutchinson Street. Authorities reported that he had suffered multiple stab wounds and blunt-force trauma. Despite initial investigations, the case eventually went cold due to a lack of leads.

The break in the case came after detectives with the department’s Cold Case Unit re-examined evidence collected from the original crime scene. Investigators utilized updated forensic technology to analyze fingerprints and DNA found on an object believed to have been used to strike Faile.

According to police, the new analysis successfully linked Craig to the crime scene.

“The Rock Hill Police Department currently has 18 Cold Case Homicides that are being investigated,” Rock Hill Police Chief Chris Watts said in a statement regarding the arrest. “These cases are still active investigations. We know there’s someone out there who can come forward to help bring closure to these victims’ families.”

Craig was taken into custody on Tuesday and has been denied bond.
