South Pointe Standout J’Zavien Currence Named Gatorade South Carolina Football Player of the Year

CHICAGO — In a prestigious announcement celebrating the nation’s top high school athletes, J’Zavien Currence of South Pointe High School has been named the 2025-26 Gatorade South Carolina Football Player of the Year.

The award, now in its 41st year, honors athletes who demonstrate excellence not just in athletic performance, but also in academic achievement and exemplary character. Currence’s selection designates him as South Carolina’s best high school football player and places him alongside an elite legacy of past winners, including NFL legends like Peyton Manning.

Dominance on Both Sides of the Ball

At the time of his selection, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior had led the South Pointe Stallions to a stellar 13-1 record and a berth in the Class AAAA state championship game. A true dual-threat quarterback and defensive playmaker, Currence’s statistics for the season are staggering:

  • Passing: 2,764 yards and 24 touchdowns.

  • Rushing: 1,497 yards and 18 touchdowns.

  • Defense: 43 tackles, 18 pass breakups, and four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown).

Currence anchored a defense that stifled opponents, allowing only 7.4 points per game throughout the season.

“J’Zavien Currence stood out in a major way on both offense and defense,” said Leon Boulware, head coach of rival Rock Hill High School. “He truly carried his team on his back and impacted the game on every snap. I have great respect for the way he elevates the players around him and leads his team.”

Excellence in the Classroom and Community

Off the field, Currence has maintained a weighted 4.10 GPA. He has already made a verbal commitment to play college football at the University of South Carolina next fall.

His impact extends to the local community as well. Currence volunteers with the “Leader in Me Club,” where he promotes character development and leadership among his peers. Additionally, he serves as a youth mentor, emphasizing the importance of academics to younger athletes.

A Legacy of Impact

As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sports, Currence will receive a grant to donate to a social impact partner of his choice. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced later in the year.
